Jaisalmer - A Golden City of Havelis

Introduction

An affair of prime legacy and heritage, the havelis are a prime attraction in Jaisalmer most frequented by the visitors. Architecture

The mansions were a residence besides being a status symbol of the merchants. The lavisher the haveli, the richer merchant. The architecture of these havelis is exclusive and unique. The entrance gates are carved and the stone sculptures are magnificent. For instance, the Nathmal's Haveli was formatted by two Muslim brothers - Hathi and Lalu. Stone elephants are carved on the gates of two of the havelis vis -a - vis Salim Singh ki Haveli and Nathmal Haveli. Also, to be seen are the carvings of trains and bicycles, gadgets of the erstwhile modern era. The interiors of the imposing havelis are embellished with lovely miniatures.

 

Attractions

Three main havelis in Jaisalmer are of special interest.

Patwon ki Haveli: This mansion is the most elaborate affair of magnificence. Sandwhiched between narrow lanes, the mansion is classified into six apartments out of which two are undertaken by Archaeological Survey of India. The mansion was built by five Jain brothers during 1800 to 1860 who flourished by merchandising of jewelery and fine brocades.

Salim Singh ki Haveli: The 300 years old private haveli which is quite intricate in shape is named after its first owner, the Jain diwan Salim Singh. From narrow floors it expands to a myriad of carvings. You will love to see the lovely arched roofs with carved brackets in a form of a peacock. Nathmal ki Haveli:This 19th century haveli was once a Prime Minister's house. It is proud of its impressive exteriors trailing from carving to paintings. Two brothers Hathi and Lalu designed and contributed in the layout plan of the haveli.

Nearby Places

Jaisalmer Fort: The imposing fort was initiated by Rawal Jaisal in the 12th century. The Bhatti rulers had kept on strengthening the fort and consequently the fort has been among one of the living forts in Indian history. Access the fort by a ramp winding through four colossal gates. Gadi Sagar Lake: The tank was once a water reservoir and supplied water to the town. Surrounded by temples and shrines, the lake is a must-see site in Jaisalmer. Desert Safari Jaisalmer

Fort Rajwada: The best heritage hotel in Jaisalmer, it is built in yellow sandstone and offers facilities like even Kerala Massages. It has 91 rooms to serve to the visitors.
